3 Common Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make That Destroy Their Ability to Reach Clients and How to Avoid These Mistakes Once and for All
Do you feel like you’re unable to reach clients with your marketing?
Are you worried that you’re networking and marketing constantly with little to show for it? Do you wish you could wave a magic wand and be an expert at marketing, reaching and connecting with clients?
Have you thought lately, “I hate marketing myself? I love my work, my clients, and feel fulfilled when they succeed using my programs. I really dislike, loathe, and detest the marketing part. It makes me feel yucky.”
Wonderful! I’m so glad you’re here. As a small business marketing expert, geek, and trainer, I love teaching women how to breakthrough their love-hate relationship with marketing, so you can reach clients with ease!
Let’s fix this!
Here are 3 common marketing mistakes women entrepreneurs make when it comes to how to reach clients and how to fix them.
Mistake #1. You really don’t love marketing yourself or your business.
You’re not alone. I hear this sentiment EVERYDAY from women business owners.
How to fix this: Reframe your definition of marketing. Marketing is the way you educate (potential) ideal clients about how you help, others just like them, solve problems. Or achieve goals and dreams.
Today, marketing isn’t being a used car sales person or electronics store sales clerk. Where they try to sell you a 75-inch screen TV before the big game.
Marketing is not selling. Marketing is ‘sorting’.
- ‘Sorting’ is having conversations to see if people who have problems are a fit for you (the problem solver). It’s also about figuring out if you’re a fit for them.
- Sorting means: do the two of you mesh? You only want to work with people who get fabulous results from your work, right?
Keep in mind when you’re networking, talking with referral partners or at an event, you’re sorting. You’re figuring out who’s a fit for your programs, products, and services.
Mistake #2: Forgetting to remind yourself everyday: your work matters.
How to fix this: Your work REALLY matters to the people you’re meant to serve. Thankfully, our communities, our country and our planet have lots of wonderful healers, trainers, and experts. Why? Because each person must connect with the one coach, mentor, trainer, healer, expert who can best serve her. We each mesh best, and can learn from, different people.
The world needs all of the smart, ethical, talented, healers, speakers, trainers, coaches, experts, consultants, business owners and entrepreneurs it can get. We have ginormous problems and big businesses, governments; the Ubers of the world can’t solve them. They can’t even scratch the surface.
You’re serving the people who need you. Make that the basis for all of your marketing efforts.
Mistake #3: Making your self-introduction about you.
How do you introduce yourself and your work at business events? Make sure you aren’t listing your services. Don’t sound like a restaurant menu.
Avoid saying, “I’m Ms. Blue and I’m a CPA and we do taxes, payroll, tax planning and strategy for companies of all sizes.” Yawn.
Instead, a CPA can introduce herself this way; “We work with frustrated small business owners who want to understand how to improve their payroll and tax practices so they can substantially grow their business.”
This explanation/introduction narrows the audience to business owners who are focused on growth and who want great expertise. This self-introduction repels the kind of buyer whose simply looking for a tax person who does the cheapest returns.
Your Best Next Steps to Reach Clients
At a recent yoga class when I was visiting Santa Barbara, the wonderful instructor closed with this affirmation:
Everyday, in every way, I am growing richer and richer.
It fits here so well. Each day, as a woman business owner, you’re growing wiser, more in-tune with the people you serve best, more sensitive to their priorities, problems and fears.
Keep these thoughts top of mind when you’re marketing and networking to reach your people. Your tribe. Those spectacular, whatever-it-takes men and women who get phenomenal results from your work.
